FMSSAS eNews 11.09.24

Hi everyone!
Another Saturday, another eNews.  On Fridays I attend a knitting group comprised of ladies who knit for charity, or for fun.  This week I discovered one of the members is a fellow fibromite.  It taught me that life cannot be compartmentalised.  There are always overlaps.  Two people from the church I attend are also fibromite’s, and are members of the Horsham group.  It’s good when you find you have more in common than just fibro!

Scientists find gene that controls chronic pain
British scientists have identified a gene responsible for regulating chronic pain, called HCN2, and say their discovery should help drug researchers in their search for more effective, targeted pain-killing medicines.
Scientists from Cambridge University said that if drugs could be designed to block the protein produced by the gene, they could treat a type of pain known as neuropathic pain, which is linked to nerve damage and often very difficult to control with currently available drugs.

An Afternoon With Dr Raymond Perrin
Eastbourne Fibro/M.E. Support Group’s special meeting at The Deerfold Centre, 233 Seaside, Eastbourne, Wednesday, October 5 · 2:00pm - 4:00pm
THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED!!!
Dr. Raymond N. Perrin is Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Public Health and Clinical Sciences at The University of Central Lancashire and a Registered Osteopath and Specialist in ME.
Treating a patient for back pain in 1989 led him to the concept that there was a structural basis to ME. He has spent over twenty years researching the medical facts and sifting through the scien...tific evidence while successfully treating an increasing number of ME/Fibromyalgia sufferers and teaching fellow osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists around the world the fundamentals of the Perrin Technique.

Thyroid Disease in Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are multi-system illnesses. They hit you hard in multiple ways, and confuse doctors of all specialties because not everything can be explained by the one system they focus on.
In recent years, a new term has been gaining acceptance -- neuro-endocrine-immune. That reflects the scope of these illnesses accurately and conveys their complexity.
Still, we don't tend to get a lot of information about the interplay of the systems involved. With fibromyalgia, a lot of the focus in on neurology. In chronic fatigue syndrome, you hear most about the immune system. The "endocrine" part tends to be forgotten.  Read more:-

For the Love of Purple Kale
Kale is one of the best leafy green vegetables, considered a star amongst healthy-eaters. It is loaded with nutrients including potent phytonutrients from the Cruciferous vegetable family which includes broccoli, cabbage and bok choy. Studies have shown that two phytonutrients in these foods, the Indole-3-carbinols and the sulforaphanes help prevent heart disease and cancer, can act as anti-inflammatories and helps our bodies slow down the aging process.

I think that is all I have for you for now.   I hope to be back with you next week.  I can’t make promises of any kind at the moment as I don’t know when my hip revision operation will be.  It’s very unlikely to be this week, although the possibility of another dislocation is always omnipresent!!
I wish you all you wish for yourself!

Massage Envy - Fibromyalgia: Management Through Massage
Massage therapy is one of the oldest methods of healthcare still in practice. At Massage Envy, our professional massage therapists concentrate on improving blood circulation in the muscles, which increases the flow of nutrients and eliminates waste products. This is particularly beneficial for those with fibromyalgia as it can reduce your heart rate, relax your muscles, improve range of motion in your joints, and increase production of your body's natural painkillers.

Yoga Can Counteract Fibromyalgia, Study Suggests
"Previous research suggests that the most successful treatment for fibromyalgia involves a combination of medications, physical exercise and development of coping skills," said James Carson, Ph.D., a clinical health psychologist and an assistant professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine. "Here, we specifically focused on yoga to determine whether it should be considered as a prescribed treatment and the extent to which it can be successful."

New Medicines For Fibromyalgia
If you have fibromyalgia syndrome, then you have probably tried countless treatments in order to help reduce your many symptoms. There are a wide variety of medications available to treat the widespread pain, fatigue, and depression caused by fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, a lot of this medication causes numerous side effects and requires persistent fine-tuning in order to be beneficial. Luckily, a number of new fibromyalgia medications are now available to help manage your fibromyalgia symptoms.

Possible Fibromyalgia Drug Moves Forward
Droxidopa is a synthetic version of a substance your body uses to make the neurotransmitter/hormone norepinephrine. Norepinephrine performs several important functions, and your body also uses it to produce dopamine, another important neurotransmitter. Studies have shown that this drug can improve fatigue, weakness, concentration, and orthostatic hypotension (blood pressure drop upon standing, which causes dizziness) in several conditions.

Understanding Fibromyalgia Pain - 7 Types of Fibromyalgia Pain
You hear a lot about "fibromyalgia pain," but those of us with fibromyalgia (FMS) experience several kinds of pain.
“Medically speaking, only a few of the fibromyalgia-pain types I talk about here have names and definitions. But just as Eskimos have several words for snow, I think we need to have several ways to name, define and categorize our pain. I've created some of my own categories, based on my experience and on conversations with other fibromites. My hope is that understanding the medical terms will help us communicate better with doctors, while my categories will help you understand your illness and let you know you're not alone.”

Mental vs. Emotional Decisions in Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Most people make emotional buying decisions. That's great for the sales person, but it can be costly for the buyer. When it comes to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and other health decisions, it's even more important to follow your head and not your heart.

Honoring Your Limits With Fibromyalgia
“Putting yourself first is a hard concept for most of us to grasp. I believe we are givers and over achievers by nature. I also believe that these personality traits, while noble, contribute to our illness. But they can be overcome. It takes time and it takes practice. Give yourself a challenge. Take one thing off your plate this week. Just say no to it, and instead, spend that time doing something healthy that nourishes you. Be a little selfish. You will be amazed at how it makes it that much easier to honor the many commitments in your life.”

The Forbidden Food You Should Never Stop Eating
The demonization of saturated fat began in 1953, when Dr. Ancel Keys published a paper comparing saturated fat intake and heart disease mortality. His theory turned out to be flimsy, to say the least, but the misguided ousting of saturated fat has continued unabated ever since. Fortunately, the truth is finally starting to come out, as medical scientists have begun to seriously question Keys' findings.
