FMSSAS eNews 12.07.28

Hi there
The opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games has just ended.  I sat and watched it – spellbound.  It really did depict the best of British . . . even the Health Service.  What a spectacle!  So I thought, now it is already Saturday I would send this off to you instead of waiting until I get up, which might be late.  There is much for you in this week’s eNews so if you don’t spend all week watching the Games you might find time to read some of it.

TWO TV INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE WCA
Thanks to Benefits and Work member papasmurf for alerting us to two programmes about the WCA both being broadcast on Monday 30 July.
Dispatches. 8pm, Channel 4
“Using undercover filming, reporter Jackie Long investigates the shocking processes used to assess whether sickness and disability benefit claimants should be declared fit for work.”
Disabled or faking it? 8.30pm, BBC2
“Panorama investigates the government's plans to end the so-called 'sick note culture' and their attempts to get millions of people off disability benefits and into work. In Britain's modern welfare state, millions are being paid to private companies to assess sick and disabled claimants but is the system working? Or are new tests wrongly victimising those who deserve support the most?”

Pain management overview
Pain management is important for ongoing pain control, especially if you suffer with long-term or chronic pain. After getting a pain assessment, your doctor can prescribe pain relieving medicine or other pain treatments to help you get pain relief. Sometimes psychotherapy is also useful to learn how to cope with chronic pain.

Yoga
Many people both in and out of the yoga community were moved and inspired recently by a video posted on YouTube chronicling the transformation of veteran Arthur Boorman, who used a yoga-based fitness system to drastically improve his health. (Refresh your memory here.) The program he used is DDP Yoga, so of course I wanted to see what this method is all about. Let's take a look at a few other fitness-based approaches to yoga too.

8 Energy-Boosting Supplements for Fighting Fibromyalgia Fatigue
Fatigue, often extreme fatigue, is a key symptom of fibromyalgia. For many, it can be even more debilitating than the pain.
Doctors generally tend to shy away from prescribing medications to treat fatigue. I suspect that's because most of them are stimulants and can be highly addicting.
The anti-fatigue drug I most often hear being prescribed for fibromyalgia is Provigil, which is FDA approved for narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and multiple sclerosis-related fatigue. However, Provigil tends to stop working if it is taken every day.
The problem I personally have with taking prescription drugs for fatigue is that, although they may make me feel like I have more energy, they don't address the core problem causing the fatigue. I'm afraid that if I do more because I feel more energetic, I may actually be harming my body by pushing myself too much.  Read more . . . .

Fibromyalgia and Alternative Treatments
From acupuncture to chiropractic, from massage to meditation, alternative treatments are in great demand. That's especially true for people with pain-related illnesses such as fibromyalgia. Alternative medicine, including herbal therapy and homeopathy, is used in place of conventional medicine. These systems are based on the belief that the body has the power to heal itself with multiple techniques including those that involve the mind, body, and spirit. Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine.

Fibromyalgia: Creating a Treatment Plan
Fibromyalgia is a complicated medical disorder. It has no specific causes and no known cure. Yet for those who have it -- as many as one in 50 Americans -- the chronic pain, fatigue, and psychological strain of fibromyalgia are all too clear.
Fibromyalgia symptoms are treatable, however. Many experts believe the best treatment is a multifaceted approach that combines medication with lifestyle changes and alternative treatments.
You may need to work with your doctor, a physical therapist, and possibly others to tailor a treatment plan to your needs. Here’s how to get started.

Greetings fibromites and fibro friends
Who saw an Olympic torch?  Did one pass by near you?  I met someone yesterday who proudly showed me a photo she had taken on her mobile phone of one of the runners in Crawley.  We see them all the time on TV, and there’s plenty on the web, but somehow that mobile phone shot made it seem more real to me.  How much more real will meeting Andrew Holman seem than just reading his lectures and watching videos of him?  But you can do all of those things!  See the items about him in the news items this week.

The 80+ Chemical Ingredients in Febreze – Beware!
Febreze Air Effects is showcased as the ultimate odor eliminator, with untold godlike powers.  In fact, it's represented as the one product in all of existence that will get you to breathe happily, as if it were happy pills in aerosol form  ...  as if it were health food in a spray ... even an organic cleaning product that works like a magic wand.  Febreze was even said to be phthalate-free.  Well, the empirical fact is that Febreze is nothing more than a cauldron of chemicals.  It's injurious to humanity in a number of quantitative ways.

Depression
Depression in fibromyalgia is a controversial topic. In support of the contention that fibromyalgia is not a psychiatric illness, some authors believe that no correlation exists between fibromyalgia symptoms and psychological factors; others have determined that fibromyalgia is not a psychiatric disorder. The depression associated with fibromyalgia is believed to result from the pain, sleep deprivation, and dysfunction.

Is Fibromyalgia All In My Head?
he question "is fibromyalgia all in my head?" makes me want to cry. Every time it's asked, it means someone who's suffering from possibly dozens of severe symptoms is doubting his or her own illness - and usually because someone else doubted them first.
First of all, the answer is a resounding NO! You can see the research behind that answer here: FAQ - Is Fibromyalgia All In My Head?

Sound Off About Symptoms: Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
We all know it - the people around us get tired of hearing about our symptoms. Some of us keep talking while others clam up, but no matter which approach you take, you probably realize that only other people with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome really get what you're saying, anyway.
Sometimes, though, you've just got to vent. I'm in a complainy mood tonight, so to spare my Facebook friends, I'm going to post here about the things that are bugging me right now. I invite you to do the same, by leaving a comment below!
::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::--::
Did you know this about your ESA50 form?
We're all spoonies here. Or disabled. Or carers. Or families and friends of someone who is. Or just nice people who want to help put an injustice right.
With that in mind, we all know how it feels to fill in a DLA (Disability Living Allowance) claim form or an ESA50 form. (For Employment and Support Allowance )
On the whole, I think we see them as necessary evils. Yes, they could be shorter, but mostly, the people I speak to would rather lay their life bare on an impersonal form than face to face to a complete stranger.
Read more . . . . be prepared to be shocked!

We’re having the excitement of the Olympic Torch running throughout the south, this week and next.  27th July, the start date of the Games is only two weeks away.  The excitement mounts!  I guess that fibromites are a tad envious of the stamina and prowess of the athletes.  If only we could . . . .  But then, would we really want to compete?  Let’s concentrate on BEING and making the most of who we are.
Kindest regards to you all

FMSSAS eNews extra again 12.07.10

Hi
This is a quick follow-up to the message sent out last Saturday about Dr Andrew Holman’s Lecture in Chichester.  There have been some amendments, so please disregard the previous links.   Details are now available about the opportunity of an overnight stay at the Chichester Park Hotel.  Jeanne says:-
I have pleasure in providing some additional information about Andrew Holman, a new flyer, and we are excited that he is willing to share his Lectures on Fibromyalgia.

With a lot of interest in the tickets and now with the option of an overnight stay at £55 per person (no single supplements) including a 3 course meal and coffee (excellent food) bed and breakfast, you should BOOK NOW. The hotel offers the chance to swim in a warm indoor pool, enjoy the spa and steam room, exercise equipment and pamper yourself.

Enjoy the hospitality, excellent food, helpful staff and meet Dean the Manager who is a "fibro friend" and a star. Our local group meets here. You will enjoy your stay and we hope Andrew will be around to talk to those who stay overnight.

The CHICHESTER PARK HOTEL is a great venue and the home of our 4th national Fibromyalgia Conference on April 26/29 2013.

As I sit here awake at far-too-early o'clock, after getting to sleep at far-too-late o'clock, I can't help but fixate on sleep. I suppose it's more accurate to say "sleep deprivation" than "sleep," however.

Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant
A study for medical regulators found that the drugs increase the risk of heart problems which can cause sudden death.
Doctors have been told to lower the maximum dose of the UK’s most widely prescribed antidepressant, Citalopram, for all patients.
However, regulators have admitted that it is not clear whether the lower dose is safe — as this was not tested.

N.B. I would like to point out to you all that the information in my eNewsletters does not necessarily infer endorsement by the charity Fibromyalgia Support for Surrey & Sussex.   Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature must always be discussed with a qualified professional. The charity cannot be held responsible for omissions and/or errors.
Sites I refer you to are for information only.  They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will.  Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life.
I also include various awareness and local issues as well as general health considerations.    Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the above items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
